Scorpius sighed as he rapped his fingers in a mindless pattern on the desk. He hated his job. Hated it. It wasn’t that he didn’t have any work to do – he did. He just had no desire to do it. Losing his job wasn’t an issue; he was a Malfoy for Merlin’s sake. He was a commodity to any firm for which he chose to work – money rolled in just because his name was on the books.

The thing was nothing ever happened. Scorpius was part of the entertainment section of the Daily Prophet, although he used the term ‘entertainment’ very loosely. His section was the society pages. When he had begun the job it had seemed perfect. What could be better than spending all day, everyday discussing the sordid sex lives of minor celebrities and their offspring? Apparently, a lot of things were better than that. Scorpius could name twenty nine off the top of his head.

There were all these silly things such as slander and libel that he had to take into account. It was most perplexing. The first time, his bosses had written it off as a beginner’s mistake. The fourth, they realised that Scorpius actually enjoyed pissing people off, and the only way to stop the paper being sued again was to threaten Scorpius with the removal of his company broom and his job on the direr of occasions. It worked, but Scorpius wasn’t very happy about it.

On a good day Scorpius would get a call from a girl claiming that Albus Potter had got them pregnant – he got one of those at least once a week. Sometimes the Hogwarts professors would descend upon Hogsmeade and get roaring drunk. Occasionally there would be a gay sex rumour that circulated about a Quidditch player (no one even bothered to mention the Holyhead Harpies; everyone knew they were all lesbians and the team was just a front for mass orgies). Scorpius always loved the day Auror training results were revealed – telling the world James Potter had failed for the fiftieth time was always fun. It would never get old.

Today wasn’t a good day. A politician had died of a boring disease, and that about summed it up. It was days like this that Scorpius loved the fact his column was only bi-weekly. Merlin forbid that he have to make things up again. His father still hadn’t forgiven him for that.

It was with a heavy heart that Scorpius headed back to his house that evening. The house was empty and dark, and his owl hooted ominously from the depths.

Sat down at the dining table, eating a house-elf prepared meal of roast beef with all the trimmings, Scorpius looked at the empty seat opposite him.

“I hate my fucking life,” he said to the room. He placed his knife and fork on his plate before heading to the fire. It was seven o’clock - slightly later than the time he normally ended up Flooing to his parents’ house. If he wasn’t careful, they would begin to worry.

He knew his bed would already be made up. It always was.

The next day as he left his parents’ house, ridiculously full after enjoying a full English breakfast with his father, he contemplated his day.

Scorpius wasn’t due into the office for another half an hour – perhaps he could get his chores out of the way now rather than rushing through his lunch. As he left the security of the wards surrounding the Manor, he Apparated away with a pop! and appeared in Diagon Alley.

He didn’t end up where he expected though – it was the right place, but the wrong atmosphere. Diagon Alley on a Thursday morning was usually as dead as an Inferi; a few people milled about, but on the whole there was no one there. Not this morning though.

“Oi! Mr. Potter!” somebody yelled from the midst of the crowd outside Gringotts.

Scorpius rolled his eyes as he approached the back of the crowd. There was never an excuse for a lack of manners, and especially the utterance, “Oi!”.

“What’s going on?” Scorpius said, as he tapped the person in front of him.

The bloke turned around and looked Scorpius up and down. He resisted the urge to roll his eyes again; he didn’t want it to get repetitive.

“’arry Potter, you know, the Man Who Destroyed You Know Who?” the man said.

“I am familiar,” Scorpius said dryly.

“Yeah,” the bloke said, unfazed by Scorpius’ attitude. “Him and his missus, they’ve only gone and broken up like.”

Scorpius raised an eyebrow. Suddenly this little venture into Diagon Alley didn’t seem like a total waste of time. He plucked his wand out of his robes and sent his Patronus to the office. There wasn’t a chance he was going into work today. He was the first reporter here as far as he knew – Harry Potter never invited the press to his announcements. It was all terribly random; he’d just stand on the steps and a crowd would gather.

Scorpius fantasised about having that much power. People would be at his beck and call. This could be the break he needed to be given ten minions rather than one useless assistant called Jeremiah. One could be dedicated to shining his shoes or other such nonsense.

Scorpius muttered his thanks to the man in front of him before pushing past. His father had always told him that his tall, skinny frame would come in useful for something. It definitely was now; without it he would not have sharp elbows, perfect for forcing his way to the front of the crowd.

He only knocked one person over in his battle to get to the front of the crowd. Potter was still talking, shouting something about his children and an empty nest, but the crowd was in an uproar and he could barely be heard. Scorpius could see him starting to get frustrated, and could definitely lip read well enough to make out the words ‘for fuck’s sake!’.

Potter pulled out his wand and cast Sonorous again and his voice got even louder. He wrapped up the impromptu gathering quickly and the crowd began to disperse, leaving just a couple of die-hard fans. Scorpius watched as Potter signed a couple of autographs with a strained smile before he was left on the steps alone. Potter looked up and saw Scorpius. Scorpius smirked and began to walk towards him.

“Mr. Potter,” Scorpius greeted him. He held his hand out and Potter took it reluctantly.

“Hello,” Potter said.

“Scorpius,” he filled in. There was no doubt about it; Harry Potter had aged well. Very well. If Potter was gay, Scorpius would have been first in the line.

Potter nodded. “I remember. How can I help you?”

“Well, here I was just going about my daily business and what do I come across? Well, Harry Potter spreading the word of his imminent divorce. I did wonder if it was my birthday, but alas, it is not May yet, is it?”

“It’s October,” Potter said.

“Indeed it is,” Scorpius said. “Such a lovely month to be sleeping with prostitutes? Finding Mrs. Potter in bed with the Holyhead Harpies? Getting caught shagging a goat?”

“Such a delightful imagination,” Potter said wryly. “However, none of them are correct. There’s not a chance I’m letting you interview me, Malfoy. You report that Albus has a new child on the way every week, and you know fully well I have no grandchildren to speak of.”

Scorpius raised one eyebrow. “My sources, while anonymous, are very trustworthy.”

“I’m sure they are. Listen, there’s nothing to tell. Seriously. Just a late case of empty nest syndrome. We’re both still young enough to find happiness elsewhere, so we felt it was best as we were no longer in love,” Potter told him, running a hand through his hair, revealing that jagged scar on his forehead..

Scorpius didn’t believe him in the slightest, but he wasn’t stupid enough to think that Potter would actually tell him he’d been shagging a goat either. “Fair enough,” Scorpius lied. “Thank you for your time, Mr. Potter.”

Potter sighed and said goodbye to Scorpius, before he Apparated away, leaving Scorpius standing alone on the steps. The dust of Potter’s Apparation began to settle, and a leaflet fluttered to the floor.

Scorpius bent down and picked it up. It was an advertisement for a bar, more specifically an evening this week. With a smirk, Scorpius folded the piece of paper and put it in his pocket. It looked like he had plans for Thursday night.

“Be careful, dear,” his mother said. She straightened his tie before she kissed him on the cheek and walked out the room. “Owl me when you’re home!”

“If there was ever any doubt about why you are still living at home, and fancy men, the answer just walked out the door,” Father said.

“Do shut up,” Scorpius said. He gazed into the mirror before he turned around to glare at his father. “And I don’t live at home.”

“You sleep here six nights a week. You live at home.”

“I’m going now,” Scorpius said. “This is a fact-finding mission for an article. I will be fine. Tell Mother to keep her knickers on, I will be fine.”

“I’ll ignore the fact you said ‘I will be fine’ twice then, as well as your suggestion that I tell your mother to keep her knickers on. Try not to embarrass yourself,” Father said and clapped a hand on Scorpius’ shoulder. He left the room without another word.

Scorpius Apparated to the end of an alley way two minutes away from the bar. After stepping out of the yellow polystyrene takeaway box he appeared in, he walked up to the bar and got frisked by the bouncer.

Inside, the bar was nothing like Scorpius had expected. For one, the people on the dance floor were all men. Together. There were a few women dotted around the place as well, but for the most part, the bar was very high in testosterone. He smirked as he immersed himself in the throng of people. Just one sight of Harry Potter in this bar would be enough to fuel his column for a month. He would have never guessed that the Man Who Destroyed You Know Who played for the same team that he did.

Scorpius headed to the bar and pulled out one of the notes he had exchanged at Gringotts.

“What can I get you?” the bloke behind the bar asked Scorpius.

“Surprise me,” Scorpius told him, figuring it was the easiest way to get a decent drink when he had no idea what to order.

The bloke smirked and nodded before he wandered off, returning a minute later with a bright yellow drink. Scorpius handed the note over, waving off his change before he took a sip. It was orange flavoured, but he was overwhelmed by the taste of vodka as it burned down his throat, setting his stomach on fire.

He stood at the bar for quite a while, watching the people on the dance floor as well as the people who were arriving through the entrance. He wasn’t in a bad place; he didn’t think he could be seen by those entering, which was definitely his goal. He had been there for over an hour before his bladder began to protest. Setting his glass down on the bar, Scorpius headed for the bathrooms, squeezing his way past the crowds which had accumulated.

Surprisingly, the bathroom was empty. He headed for the urinal furthest from the door and did his business before zipping up and heading to the wash basins. The door behind him opened and a man stumbled through. Scorpius studied his reflection in the mirror; certain that he knew that face from somewhere. That bright blue hair was familiar as well, even though he was fairly certain he had never seen a fellow human being with that colour hair.

The man stood next to Scorpius as he washed his hands, catching his eye in the mirror.

“All right?” he said, looking Scorpius up and down once.

“Yes,” Scorpius said bluntly. Muggles were more forward than he remembered; it was the alcohol he decided. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” the man said with a laugh and a shake of his head. “Teddy.”

“Scorpius.”

Teddy’s eyes widened before he laughed again. “Ahh I see. A Malfoy in a Muggle bar. Who would have thought it?”

Scorpius was stunned. “You know me?”

“You know me, too,” Teddy said. He looked at Scorpius for a long moment before he smiled. “I’ll see you out there, yeah?” He winked and disappeared out the door before Scorpius could take another breath.

Fuck, Scorpius thought. Fuck, fuck, fuck. That must be who Potter was here with. It was too much of a coincidence otherwise. His brain began to whir with possibilities. Teddy… Teddy Lupin - that was his name. Harry Potter’s godson, he had been orphaned in the war. What was he doing here with Harry Potter? Teddy nodded and took Scorpius’ hand in his. “I wouldn’t say that until the morning if I was you. Harry is waiting at the flat. I told him I’d be ten minutes at the most.”

“You were that certain I was up for it?” Scorpius asked sarcastically.

“Well, if you weren’t, we would have been fine on our own.”

“I’m sure you would,” Scorpius muttered as Teddy pulled him through the hot, sweaty club. “But I’m more than fine.”
